Postcards from the ed.: some thoughts on something in the wudder's first year

Today Something In The Wudder turns one year old.

Or, technically maybe it does so tomorrow, July 4th, since that is the actual birth date listed on its Facebook page.

And if we’re being f'real-f'real, the uploading of some of the first few pieces in this piece actually began in late June, though that was still in the soft opening stage, before we were blasting stuff out to the public, knew what this space was shaping up to be, or had any idea what we were doing in terms of uploading photos, videos or anything else for our self, while still relying on our beloved friend Mitra’s help.

What a difference a year makes.

Has it really been a year since leaving California, in the wake of all the trials, tribulations and tragedy that was the first half of 20SickDream, to drive solo back to South Jersey?

One year ago, we were…

Still, ostensibly, in technical recruiting, lamenting the gig we didn't get at Google in Venice due, ironically, at least in part to bad info from a lazy recruiter.

13 years into life as a Los Angeles, California resident.

Approximately 40 pounds heavier.

Still smoking more Marlboros than Newport 100’s…or still smoking, period, before quitting *crossing fingers* for good on June 6th, 2017.

One year ago, our homie Lag was still living, in the same strangely sustained limbo that he’d been existing in since the year before we hopped on a one-way USAir flight from PHL to LAX for $75, after packing up a little rice-burner ’91 Geo Prizm, inherited from our late grandmother Josephine “Sarge” Koelling, like a suitcase, and shipping it out to the West Coast a week ahead of our departure for $750.

A year ago, we had yet to receive our first check for writing (thanks, Dana!), which ended up being cosmically dated on our recently passed dear friend Kenny LeMay’s birthday, covering a show by one of his favorite artists, Colin Hay.

Has it really been twelve months since our summit meeting with long-time #ThatSite brethren Doc Claw, in Cleveland (or more accurately at a spot called The Winking Lizard in Independence, OH), the week of the Cavs’ first title, while cranking out what would be our first Wudder material, from the comfort of a Comfort Inn hotel room, staying an extra night before making the final stretch of drive to Philly, in the wee hours, blasting "Erotic City" while admiring the skyline approaching dawn, then heading over the Ben Franklin Bridge to DAWGtown, Jersey?

A year ago, my mother's mother was still just a spry 97-year-old who hadn’t yet become a quasi-internet celebrity. GET WELL SOON, NANA, WE HAVE A DEAL!

The Ryan DeWitt Memorial Trail was still a work in progress, we’ll be down there with our DAWGS putting in some summer #SweatEquity this upcoming Saturday.

Allen Iverson was not yet in the National Basketball Hall of Fame.

Unofficial estimate at 101 Drops of Wudder (plus 46 additionally published shots at other spots) ago.

Yes, we have admittedly had some less prolific stretches in recent months, as life and paid writing obligations have entered our path, but don’t get it twisted, this will always be home, from last July 20SickDream, until the day I’m gone and maybe even beyond.

This year flew by faster than an eye blink.

And I imagine that pace will only continue quickening from here.

“Time is a thief” as my old man likes to say.

So, for today, or tomorrow, or this whole month of July, a month which spawned this site last year, as well as my little sister some years before that, we’d like to say thank you to everybody involved in helping us reach The Wudder’s first birthday.

Much Love,

Bomb

p.s. Stay tuned, as we get off this self-referential kick, by kicking off July with a Streaming Consciously on the new Jay-Z.
